Malibu Mocha Sectional (and other Big Lots furniture) Install Tips

We found a few good deals recently for new some living furniture at Big Lots. Purchased items were the Simmons Malibu Mocha 2-Piece sectional (with four pillows). We also picked up the matching ottoman (SKUs: 810052897, 81005289).

The “install” just included attaching the feet to these units, but if you’re like us (we couldn’t remember the last time we used the drill), you might find this task a small challenge. Here are some tips/warnings for anyone searching for information on this:

  • Don’t bother looking for instructions or a manual. There isn’t one! You should have 4 feet and 8 screws per sectional unit though. Make sure those are with the unit.
  • There are no pre-drilled holes.

Tools you will need:

  • Needle-nose pliers
  • A drill
  • 1/8″ drill bit
  • A Phillips-head screwdriver bit
  • An extender for the drill (the holes in the feet are quite deep) – you may not need this if your drill bits are long enough.
  • We also used a razor to cut a few things (keep reading)

After lots of trial and error, this process worked best for us:

  1. Carefully remove plastic and cloth wrapping. Use the needle nose pliers to pull out any staples that are holding the cardboard or cloth on. Once the wrapping is off, inspect the edges and corners of the bottom of the unit to look for any other staples sticking out that you may have missed. Yank em out.
  2. Now, look at the corners of the unit. You will need to pre-drill holes into the wood near the corners of the unit. This was complicated for us because there was some extra cotton jammed between the wood and the gray fabric on about 50% of the corners. You won’t be able to drill/screw through this cotton. It twists around the bit and just locks everything in place. Again, not all corners had this problem, only about half of them.
  3. For the corners that you feel padding between the bottom cloth and wood: use a sharp razor, make a small cut in the gray fabric, and use the pliers to pull out the extra padding jammed down there. When you’re doing it, it will look like you’re pulling a lot of stuff out, but don’t worry… its not even supposed to be there.  Just make sure you’re not pulling it out of the sides. We ended up with about a handful of cotton (when compressed) for each corner that had this problem.
  4. Once you confirm that there is nothing between the wood and the gray fabric on the corners, its time to install the feet.
  5. We found this very easy to do with two people. One person holds the foot in place, the other drills and then screws. Be sure to set the feet in a few centimeters to hide the lip of the plastic from the top, but also make sure that you keep the feet on the wooden edges, or else the foot will slip inside when weight is applied.
  6. While the unit is on its side, and the other person is holding the foot and providing support from the other side of the unit, pre-drill your hole with the 1/8″ bit. Reverse the drill direction, pull it out. Attach the screwdriver bit and screw the screw in tight.
  7. That’s it! Do that for all corners. The ottoman uses the exact same process.

Shame on Big Lots for a) making this more difficult than it needs to be, and b) Not providing instructions for those of us that aren’t very handy 🙂

UPDATE (11/5/2013): We’ve had this couch for one year now, and it has held up just fine.  We have a large dog that likes to sleep on it, as well as some father-in-laws spending a few nights on it.  There is no sagging, or obvious “favorite” spots.  The dog hair from our German Shepherd-ish dog comes off with a vacuum attachment. Several folks were asking if the hair gets tangled in the micro-suede fiber, and from what I’ve seen, this isn’t the case. Here’s the best I can do for a closeup shot of the couch pre-vacuuming. Click to enlarge.

And here’s the monster responsible for all this hair, and probably the one who spends the most time on this unit:

Hi there! My wife and I happened to sit down on this exact sectional last week in Biglots and were nicely surprised at the comfort and quality! The guy in the store said he sees the furniture go on sale, and we would love to get it on sale. Just wondering, did you get it on sale and if so, how much of a markdown IS their sale price. Thanks!

Hi Dirk, the sectional WAS on sale when we purchased. We got it for $50 dollars off, for $750 (I believe). This was about two weeks ago. The Ottoman was in addition to this.

The guy at the store told me I missed the “big black Friday” sale on this unit, but I stopped him before he told me the discount I missed out on – I didn’t want to hear it 🙂

If you sign up for Big Lots’ rewards card, you get access to their weekly specials one week in advance online.

Good luck with your shopping – 2 weeks in and the sectional is holding up very well, and is very comfortable.

So far, so good. Just watched a movie on it this morning… fell asleep on it for a while yesterday. No sagging or anything with the couch. The ottoman is ever so slightly starting to sag in the middle, but that is probably due to me sitting on it or something. Our large dog sits up on the ottoman as well, so that probably doesn’t help.

But keep in mind I didn’t buy the ottoman that comes with the Mocha set… it was a storage ottoman from Big Lots.

Glad to hear the couch is so comfy! We are looking at buying it too. I’m trying to find out the measurements so we can see if we have enough space. Can you help me out with that? FYI, it’s back on sale for $749 through 2/23/13. Thanks for the great tips and review!

Hi Cindy. The dimensions posted online are: Right Arm: 86″L x 37″D x 38″ – Chaise: 86″L x 37″D x 38″H. If you need any custom measurements, let me know and I’ll go find my tape measure 🙂

I was wondering about the comfort; when you sit in it does the seating have a wide base cushion & come to the back of your knees and support your legs?
I hope the seating is a wider base to support the backs of the knees my hubby is 6 foot and has long legs he never has a good support from the thin based seating couches.

      Hi Heather,
I would say it does. I’m 5’10 and it goes all the way out to my knee. In fact, I just measured. From the back cushion to the front, the seat is 24″. If you push the back cusion in a little (as would be the case if you were sitting on it), it would be a few inches more.

      Hope this helps.

Hi I just purchases this couch and as you were I’m sitting in the floor and staring at 2 different pieces. We can’t figure out how the two pieces slide together. It has the 2 metal pieces coming out of one and the hole in the bottom of the other but if you put it together in such the backs are uneven. I don’t know what to do lol!

Jessica, I have one big hairy dog of my own, and the hair isn’t a big deal, mostly because the couch is the same color as the dog.

I’m not sure if I would consider it “easy” to wipe hair off this couch. It would be easier on a leather couch, I suppose. But I don’t have too much trouble with the Malibu Mocha.

I’m looking at purchasing the couch and ottoman. The picture on Big Lots’ website is a lot lighter than what is in store. Is it the darker or lighter color that they actually sell? Also, does the ottoman open? I forgot to look at that when I was in there this evening. Still holding up nicely??? Thanks for your help.

Hi Marie, the picture above (and on the Big Lots website) is very well lit, and I agree, it appears much lighter than what is sitting in my living room.

The ottoman that comes with the Malibu Mocha does NOT open. For this reason, we actually purchased another ottoman that was on sale at big lots. It was from a discountinued unit, so the manager gave us a great deal. The color was slightly different, and the ottoman was a bit smaller, but it fit our needs perfectly, and matched the style very well. The ottoman we purchased was not on display in the store, so ask a helpful employee if they have anything in the back! A few months in and we are still pleased with our purchase.

We are thinking about getting this sofa. This Sunday 03/03/13 they are supposed to be having a 20% of friends and family sale. So it will be very cheap. It seems to be a good sofa from the things you have been saying.

Brandon, it is pretty light. My wife and I had no problems loading/unloading and moving it around. We rented a truck from Lowes for $20 dollars to get it home – (the deal is $20/90 minutes) and had no problems. Good luck!

David – Do you know what the warranty on this and how has the couch held up so far? Are you aware if the plastic legs scratch hardwood floor? Are your cushions still firm?

    Reply
    1. David Post author

      Hi Nihar,
I am unsure about the warranty… There was no paperwork included in my unit that indicated one existed.

The couch has held up very well so far. We have a dog that sleeps on it quite a bit, and a father-in-law that uses it as a bed sometimes and there have been no issues with sagging or cushion firmness.

The plastic legs SEEM soft enough to not scratch a hardwood floor, but I really have no idea. Perhaps after repeated movements there would be scratches… I really don’t know on this one. I don’t have hardwood floors. If this is a concern, I’d recommend buying some these furniture feet pads. They are very highly rated.

My daughter and I saw this in our Big Lots and the color was more of a green (sage) rather than mocha. Did you find that with yours as well or is yours more the color of the picture?

Hi, yes I found it is kind of a dark green at my Big Lots as well. I’m going to call and see if there are two colors of it. The sign also said it was Mocha. Strange. I really like this one too though. Have been looking for a smaller-ish one for months and this one is comfortable. Nice to read the reviews as I also wondered how it would hold up. Thanks to everyone for all your input – it helps a lot.

David! I just picked up this beauty in dark brown faux leather and am very excited to put it together. Regarding the connection on the two parts of the couch, did you just place the little hook into the slit on the other couch or did you have to somehow drill them together? Thank you for the wonderful tutorial; certainly helped a lot!

I thought from the lack of instructions that I was just supposed to be able to screw the wood screws in by hand so I couldn’t figure out why it was so insanely difficult. Purchased this sectional in April 28, 2013. Having issues with a board poking out on the lounge piece and center cushion seeking in also on that section. I went in to see what the warranty was and was told I have to contact store manager. I called did get a hold of her and was told store warranty is 30 days and the manufactures warranty info should have been in the plastic at time of purchase. There was no information attached. she said to check in between the cushions as well. If I still didn’t find the warranty info call her back and she would see what she could find out for me. I also went on-line to locate the manufactures warranty with no luck. Hoping for the best but, this seems like it is going to be a process!

I was looking for a specific sectional and was looking for hours online. Finally this sofa showed up under Big Lots. I was not sure the quality because of the low price $749. So I went to look at it in the store. I fell in love and thought it was perfect. The price, comfort and look of it was exactly was I was looking for. It is for a smaller living room but a lot of people are around and will be using it. I used the contractor delivery service they use since I was in NY and I purchased it in NJ( which I saved a lot in taxes) so the extra $125 was worth it. The delivery took 10 minutes to set up and remove our old couch for an additional $40. Which was very convenient for my parents… They were very professional and the couch was in perfect condition. So just wanted to say the couch looks amazing, classy and changed the whole room. It also fit perfect in the small living room even though it looked big in the store. A lot of people have been sitting on this very comfortable couch and so far so good it looks great. We have had it for a month. It was so worth the money especially on a tight budget. By far the best deal I have seen on a large sectional so far. I highly recommend it.

Just purchased this Malibu Mocha Sectional in NY this past Saturday. I actually saw the sectional in one Big Lots store for $749.99 plus 20% off for friends and family. Then found it in another Big Lots store for $ 699.00 plus 20% off for friends and family. I paid $559.99 for the sectional. I did not purchase the ottoman.
I can honestly say it is beautiful and so far so good. Like a lot of other people I thought the sample in the store looked sage green. The piece we picked up from the store is mocha brown. I am curious, how everyone else’s sectional is holding up?

David, thanks so much for being so diligent about a) writing a review and b) following up with responses to all these questions!! I’m looking at the same couch (who would have thought the only couch I’ve liked so far would be at Big Lots…). I have dogs and my main concern is whether hair gets trapped in the fabric. I noticed it’s a microfiber of sorts- essentially fibers bonded to a sheet that aren’t looped but rather stick out like fur. The last couch I had, the strands looped back and trapped hair that could not even be pulled up with a vacuum. It drove me nuts.

Have you found this to be the case with this couch?

    Reply
    1. David Post author

Adrian, my apologies, I meant to respond a while back, and it slipped my mind. I would agree with Lynne in that the dog hair comes off pretty easy. But my dog has very long hair (like 4-6 inches).. not the short thin hair that usually balls up. This type of hair does not seem to get caught in the fibers or anything like that. I will post a close up picture of what it looks like with dog hair today.

So far STILL great! It’s a month later and it has been used like crazy! Two kids and three adults fit comfortably for hours at a time. BTW the throw pillows that came with it are really comfortable too! Also we have a big black furry dog and we don’t let him lay on it but he has slobbered on it and from him leaning against it his hair has gotten on the front of it. But wanted to say when we wipe up his slobber it cleans up very easy and vacuums up nice as well.

Natalie, the unit comes apart at the corner. If you look at the first picture above, the split is directly to the RIGHT of the pillow close to the corner of the unit. There is just a slot where the other half gets lifted up and set into. I don’t recall there being anything more involved than just lifting it into the slot on the unit pictured to the left of the pillow.

Wow! You & your guests are a treasure trove of information on this. I’ve been eying it for a month or so now & think it would meet the needs of a hopefully blending family. It seems it would seat quite a few for a movie night, etc. and several of us with lots of elbow room normally. I’ve gotta try & maneuver one of those 20% off sales. I wish the ottoman were cheaper but it will be necessary for us. I had no idea about the legs and all that’s involved. Dumb question: does anyone just leave the legs off if sitting on carpet?

Hey Zmster, we considered it leaving the legs off, but it just looked…. kind of dumpy. Sorry, I don’t know how else to put it. The couch is very nice, but having a couch sit flat on the floor really changed the room for the worse. I don’t know why – maybe it just wasn’t my style. The instructions above seems like a lot to take in, but I was very detailed. Don’t let them scare you! The couch looks REALLY good with the legs on.

Hi. I am by going back and forth between this sectional and another one at big lots. My main question is how many adults do you think could comfortably sit on this? We have alot of parties and get togethers, so i want to be able to fit a decent amount on it. Plus we have 2 kids, an english bulldog and lab puppy that is growing by the minute. So we obviously need more seating than what we have now. Also, this definately is like an olive green in the store, which is kind of a bummer. But it still looks like a very nice set. Also, is it.still holding up nicely David? So glad i came across this website!

    1. David Post author

Hi Ashley, it is my opinion that you could comfortably sit 5 adults on this couch. One person may have a somewhat awkward seat where the lounge is, but I would feel very comfortable with 5 on this couch.

It is holding up well. I guess we have owned it for about 1.5 years now. There is some slight difference in where I ALWAYS sit and somewhere I NEVER sit, but I suppose that is to be expected by now. One thing that I’m learning that I don’t really like about this couch is that there are no detachable cushions. This makes cleaning dog hair and crumbs out of the cracks and crevices somewhat difficult. But this is really just a minor annoyance. We have a VERY hairy dog, and the amount of stuff that gets caught way down in the cracks of this couch is kind of disturbing, but jamming the vacuum extension down in there takes care of it pretty well.

All in all, 1.5 years later I’m still happy with my purchase.

Hi, i have this couch as well and two of the cushions are falling apart. The zipper came undone and the other issue is that we can’t remove the cushions to sew them so the foam and the cotton is constantly falling out. Its very frustrating! Does anyone know if there is a warranty? We bought it in 2013. Just hate to have to get rid of the couch so soon. But its very tempting when there isn’t a way to see it together without hurting your hands trying to get behind the cushion.

I’ve had this sectional for over a year, but before that I had the sofa and chair and a half in the SAME fabric for 5 yrs. I have 4 kids, so I know it washes beautifully and stays it’s shape. I sold it when I bought this one to someone who was curious why we were selling a brand new couch! It cleans like a dream. This sectional is the same. My neighbor was moving two weeks ago and her daughter was at our house playing. She will be 5 soon, and still managed to find a pen from a mover and COLORED on it. I took a little hair spray and a damp cloth and in 30 secs, it was completely gone. I was amazed and I’ve come to realize, that I will probably sit in a room and cry when they stop making these couches with this fabric! So far, this sectional is just as lovely. The ottoman is still nice and plump and the couch looks new. We have a Cocker Spaniel who sheds like crazy, and who also loves that couch. so vacuuming does the trick.

Can anyone tell me what cleaner would be easiest, and safest to use on this furniture? We have had ours for going on 2 years. Still attractive and comfortable. Makes our old fashioned living room look a little more dignified! I sooo recommend this furniture for folks on a budget to have something super nice! Anyway, yeah, need advice on best cleaner to remove cat drool from couch!

We have three dogs (over 60 lbs) and a cat .. plus us…and our family/friends visit often.
We have had this couch over a year with NO signs of it falling apart anytime soon.

I vacuum it daily and spot clean it as needed (with warm water and soap or apulstry cleaner) i take the carpet cleaner to it monthly.

The dogs sometimes use the couch as part of their race track, which infuriates me… maybe a snag or two in cushion seams but nothing major considering the abuse.

For the cost and comfort this couch was worth every penny. Think we paid just under $800-700?

How did you connect the two sections together? One piece has two ‘L’ brackets that slide into the slot cut into the bottom fabric of the second piece. Does any of it bolt together?

I’ve had this sectional for about a year and a half and the couch part of the sectional is still great. The chaise part I’m having a big problem with the big cushion. It’s lost its firmness right where the cushion starts. I have no idea on how to attempt to fix this problem.

I just bought this couch and the 2 pieces will not attach. I know they are supposed to just slide on to each other (L-shaped brackets). But they don’t :(. Anyone have ideas? There’s no gap in the chaise lounge part for the bracket to go into.

Thank you so much for posting these instructions. We just bought two sofa sets/ottoman from Big Lots and wondered how to get the feet on! Thanks again for your help. We really appreciate it.

Did the feet have hanger bolts installed in them? Then there should have been t-nuts in the bottom of the frame. You need to feel around for the holes.

INSTALLING THE PLASTIC FEET IS EASY IF YOU KNOW HOW TO USE A POWER DRILL ON SCREWDRIVER SETTING. IGNORE THE ARTICLE’S INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT DRILLING HOLES IN THE WOOD.

I was “overwhelmed” by the article instructions and so put off installing the 12 PLASTIC FEET of our sectional and ottoman. Fortunately, we ordered 2 additional sofas from another store and “had them delivered”. I watched as the delivery men installed 8 of the same style PLASTIC FEET in minutes.

    SOLUTION:
    DO NOT DRILL HOLES !
    TURN FURNITURE OVER
USE A POWER DRILL (SET DRILL TO LOW SPEED & MEDIUM TORQUE “SCREWDRIVER” SETTING).
USE A SHORT EXTENSION TO FIT INTO THE “COUNTER-SUNK” HOLES IN THE PLASTIC FEET.
USE A PHILLIPS HEAD BIT THAT FITS SNUGLY INTO THE PROVIDED SCREWS.
PLACE ONE PLASTIC FOOT ON A CORNER, INSERT BOTH SCREWS AND DRILL EACH SCREW INTO THE WOOD, IT TOOK ME LESS THEN 15 MINUTES TO INSTALL ALL 12 PLASTIC FEET.
